MOMBASA CITY TOUR HALF DAY TRIP

You will be picked from your hotel at around 8.00 am and drive to Mombasa, a distance of 40 kms from Diani arriving at around 9.00am. Stop over at Elephant Tusk also known as Mapembe ya Ndovu. The Mombasa Elephant Tusks were originally built along Kilindini Road in 1952 to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II. Initially it was build with wood and Canvas. In 1956 the Municipal council refurbished  and expanded from 2 tusks to 4 tusks in preparation of a visit by Princess Margaret later that year.

Later drive on to Fort Jesus where you will meet our guide who will take you through the monument explaining into detail how it was built and its significance to the history of Mombasa. The Fort Jesus which was built by the Portuguese in 1593 by architecture from Goa. It later became the government prison during the British colonial period in 1947. Fort Jesus was named fort because the Portuguese were Christians and they sailed with the flag of Jesus. It was built mainly for protection and to control the harbor of Mombasa. There arose war between the Arabs and the Portuguese from 1593 – 1729 where many of them died due to starvation and yellow fever.

Our guide will then take you to the Mombasa Old Town where you will explore and walk along the narrow streets. You will also visit Marikiti Market built in 1914 and is one of the oldest markets in Kenya. The Vegetables, spice and meat market has stood over time and hold a lot of history since it was only for Europeans and Asians.

The tour ends at Swaminarayan Temple a Hindu Temple built with beautiful architecture that welcomes everyone. Our guide with explain to you its significance to Mombasa as a city. It’s main attraction is the eye catching colourful double doors with carvings of the ten known avatars of God per Hinduism.
